What's your recommendation rate with your customers?
Last week at the Remodelers Advantage Business Summit, Roundtables member and Sun Design founder Craig Durokso gave an inspirational talk in which he shared a story of company owner passing away unexpectedly. The man’s young son had recently joined him in business, but the father hadn’t yet shared with him the important things inside his head that one should know to run the company. That led to a great struggle for the business that ultimately resulted in it shutting its doors. Craig then challenged us to ask ourselves
What are the two most important things that you would share with your team if you knew your demise was imminent?
This morning, Remodelers Advantage polled the Summit participants with that very question, and will be compiling the results and then distributing them to everyone who participated. What an inspirational resource that will be!
We have pretty distributed responsibilities at GuildQuality and work hard to avoid single points of failure. An untimely death or unexpected departure would certainly be troubling, sad, and difficult, but I believe our business would weather it as well as such things can be weathered. So when thinking about the two most important things that I’d like our good folks to know, my answers turned to brand and leadership:
- This business has an aspirational brand. Never appeal to someone’s fears or insecurities to advance our cause. Align yourself with customers, partners, and employees who aspire to do good, be good, and live well, and build this company by helping people fulfill those aspirations.
- Management is not the same as leadership. Never, ever confuse the two. When in doubt, reflect on what the great leaders in your life might do were they in your shoes, and draw inspiration from their actions.
What are your two things?
