Bob Dylan said something that is quoted often. Well, he said a lot of things that are oft-repeated. But, one of those lines he sang that people love to repeat is, “the times they are a-changin’.” And just like the times, houses too are a-changin’ – homebuilders and remodeling experts should be aware of what the popular choices will be this year.
Designers have noted a lot is changing these days, and homebuilders and remodeling experts are going to have to keep a close eye on these trends in order to maintain their business. At the International Builders Show, presented by the National Association of Home Builders in Las Vegas this January, many designers, remodelers and homebuilders learned a lot about what homeowners are expecting this year.
1. Cater to the millennials
Though there are a number of people who believe that millennials aren’t interested in owning homes, that isn’t necessarily true. They are simply waiting for the right time and the best options. Plenty of people in their twenties and thirties would love to own a home, but they are looking for something that they can afford and that will fit into their lifestyle. Because of this, smaller homes will be particularly popular in the coming years. Keeping things simple and affordable is the best way to attract millennials to the housing market.
2. Outdoor spaces are special

Homeowners will be particularly attracted to well-designed outdoor spaces. Outside kitchens and patios or outdoor living rooms complete with televisions and nice furniture will be especially alluring in 2015. For example, at the builders’ convention, the primary house on display had several outdoor areas. Large and impressive outdoor spaces are increasingly popular with many homeowners’ in large estates with plenty of room for outdoor projects.
3. Seamless flow between rooms and spaces
There must be an even flow between spaces both inside and outside the home. For example, if homeowners have an expansive and gorgeous backyard, they are going to want to be able to access it easily. They’ll also want to have a nice view of the area. That is why it is important to incorporate a seamless flow between rooms and spaces in and around the home.
4. Go big or go … well, just go big
Homeowners are going to be looking at big remodeling projects this year. Bathrooms, for example, will move toward large, centered bathtubs or big, encased showers. And in kitchens, why go with one island when you can have two? Homeowners want to spend the money where it will be most impressive – in areas that are frequented such as kitchens and bathrooms. For many homeowners, the kitchen is the new living room, and it is important to make the space where you cook just as comfortable as the room where you and your family relax.
Homeowners’ preferences are changing, so it’s helpful to pay attention to trends in what homeowners want so that you can deliver the best experience possible. The four trends above are just a few of the things to be on the lookout for this year, so keep these in mind as you and your team meet with homeowners.
